Healthcare professionals are confronted with ethical and legal dilemmas on a daily basis. This four-hour training with Dr. Eric Johnson will explore many of the common ethical and legal dilemmas facing behavioral health practitioners and will offer a framework for exploring and resolving the following issues:

Oregon laws related to discretionary and mandatory reporting.
Ethical responsibilities inherent in making a report.
New reporting responsibilities related to prohibited and unprofessional conduct of licensed health care professionals.
Documentation responsibilities and strategies after making a report and to defend against a licensing board complaint.
The importance of professional malpractice insurance and risk management strategies to defend against a licensing board complaint.
Strategies for responding to a licensing board complaint.

Oregon Forensic Institute is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education credits for mental health professionals. Although licensing boards do not pre-approve programs to qualify for mandatory continuing education credits in ethics, past ethics programs offered by Dr. Johnson have been accepted by all of the mental health licensing boards.

The Therapist’s Role in Facilitating a Gender Transition - 6/28/2013 from 8am-12pm

Many clinicians would want to refer a transgender client to someone with more knowledge of the issues, and may believe they will never be working with such clients. Often, however, clients become aware of previously-suppressed gender identity issues through the therapeutic process, as their self-understanding deepens and their denial “softens” to permit the information to surface. Therapists and counselors play a significant role in the process of a gender transition. This workshop will explore that role, highlighting recent significant changes to the process.
